  1. Chips as in Additional file 4C were assembled, filled with water and placed on a hot plate at the indicated temperatures. The outputs were then closed, and increasing pressures were applied to the inputs using a high precision pressure controller (10 s at each pressure prior to increase). This allowed for monitoring of the pressure at which the bonding strength of the elastomer is insufficient, resulting in detachment of the material from the glass coverslip and fluid leakage (“leak”). “+” indicates no leak. These experiments were performed using newly-cut chips as well as used chips (> 10 times), and identical results were obtained
