Steps [1 – 5] trigger and coordinate the transition from functional (green) into non-functional, internalization-prone gap junction channels (yellow, orange) that then are primed via post-translational modifications to allow interaction with clathrin components to mediate their internalization (red). The color scheme of the channels corresponds to the schematic gap junction shown in Fig. 9b
